The Summit City Fencing Club has practices at Canterbury Lower School (5601 Covington Road) every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Enter Door #3, the “New Old Gym” (NOG) is directly ahead. (You must be a member of the club or a visitor who pays the floor fee in order to take part, all fencers must sign the paperwork and waiver.) The doors will be open by 6:45 PM in order for people to find appropriate equipment, then practices will run from 7:00-9:00 PM. These sessions will include the following activities during approximately these times:
7:00-7:10- PM — Warm-ups, stretching, announcements
7:10-7:30 PM — Footwork exercises
7:30-7:55 PM — Bladework and weapon exercises
8:00-8:55 PM — Fencing, coaching by FL if desired
The Floor Leader is in charge of each practice and has discretion regarding how long each activity will last. However, the goal is generally to begin open fencing by 8:00 PM. All members are required to take part in the first hour’s activities if they wish to fence in the second hour. Electric scoring sets are available for those who wish to use it; fencers who do so are asked to assist with setting it up and/or packing it away each night.
The club also offers “Casual Fencing” a couple times a month. Those nights, fencers are just expected to stretch a bit and wear proper attire, but there will be no footwork or blade exercises. See the blog (on the right side of the screen) for the dates of those “Casual” practice nights. They will usually be held on Mondays, but may vary due to tournaments or other factors.
The club currently offers “Introduction to Fencing” classes through Neighborhood Connection, which is part of the Fort Wayne Community Schools Continuing Education program. As such, classes may be held at a FWCS facility, rather than Canterbury Schools. Please see “Learn How to Fence!” for details on the Intro class offerings.
